According to the Construction Industry Federation in 2015 the Irish homeowner spent over €3.3 on repairs and maintenance thanks to the Government's Home Renovation Inventive Scheme (HRI). Thankfully the government is also giving a a tax rebate of up to €20,000 in a new help-to-buy scheme for first-time buyers. This goes toward a deposit for a new home. Plus they are extending the HRI scheme until 2018. Which is all great news for construction companies if you missed your chance to renovate your home you still have time to take advantage of the renovation incentive.
However, before you go about handing over the keys to your home to some unknown tradesman you should ensure you find a construction crew you know you can trust to do a great job on your home. Unfortunately if you're not careful and choose to work with a cowboy builder it could cost you far more money than the HRI will save you.
A good idea is to ask your neighbours or friends for people they've used and trust. If that doesn't help you locate a trustworthy tradesman then sites such as Google reviews, Facebook or onlinetradesmen.ie will provide reviews customer reviews that property owners can use to help them hire a tradesman or builder.
While the majority of Irish tradesmen provide a professional service at the right price, there is still a minority who consistently fail to deliver. After talking to some of our previous clients over the years we have noticed that "cowboys" in the building and trades sector often share some common traits, and they say much the same things.
So based on our experiences, here's the 's list of ten things cowboy's tend to say. Note them and avoid.1The Dog Ate My Qualifications...
